The Jews believed they had a privileged position in the house of God. They saw themselves as sons because they were sons of Abraham. But Jesus said you are not sons, you are slaves. But the Son can free you—you don’t have to remain a slave to sin, you don’t have to die in your sins. But you must recognize the spiritual condition of your heart. And this is where they were struggling. They were still trying to define their relationship with God based not on obedience to God or faith in God but in their national identity.
