John 8:44

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (ESV)

  1. Jesus makes an incredibly strong rebuke here. He says, your father is not God. Your father is the devil. But not only that but he says, ‘your will is to do his desires. Your will, your desire, your passions, your longings are to do that will of the devil.’

Can you imagine a Jew hearing someone say those words to you?

Jesus is rebuking not just to condemn but so they would experience a spiritual wake-up call. You may be physically of Abraham but you are not spiritually of God. You may live a religious lifestyle that looks righteous but you are in spiritual rebellion and walking in wickedness.

Jesus’ words were hard but eternity was at stake. These were not the words that people wanting to hear but eternity was at stake. These were not the words that were going to draw huge crowds, but eternity was at stake. These were the words that would get him crucified (which he willingly did) because eternity was at stake.
