John 8:56

Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” (ESV)

  1. Jesus makes this very intriguing statement that Abraham saw the day of Jesus (and I believe this refers to the first coming of Christ—the present ministry of Christ that is being described here in John).

And this statement opens up a lot of questions: when and how did Abraham see this day? Was it a vision he received during his day when he was alive on the earth? Was it knowledge he received in heaven? We don’t know. The Bible doesn’t tell us.

But what Jesus wanted his listeners to understand is that “their Father Abraham” was looking forward to the coming Messiah and Abraham was given some knowledge that the promised Messiah was fulfilled in the birth and life of Jesus. Jesus is telling this crowd, your Father, whom you place your hope in, rejoiced at my day and yet you reject me.
